Most Agates form as geodes or cavities in volcanic rock. These are often found with a crystalised (often Quartz) center. Dependant on the conditions through formation various deposited layers of chalcedony and Quartz can build up and give the geode it’s classic banded look. Agate is a relatively hard substance and is also able to resist acids, as a result it is used to make pestle and mortars to crush and mix chemicals.
